What to look for in a mobility course

Mobility is the broadest label in this sector and the easiest to fill with content that is interesting to read and useless on Monday.

Short answer

Be suspicious of breadth. Mobility courses cover transport policy, urban planning, electrification, shared services, logistics and autonomy, and a syllabus that touches all of them gives you a vocabulary rather than a capability. Pick the course that goes deep on the one part you are accountable for, and read around the rest for free.

Whether it produces a decision or a vocabulary

The test is simple: at the end, will you be able to make a call you could not make before, or only discuss it more fluently?

Courses built around a deliverable, a fleet transition plan, a depot design, a policy appraisal, pass this test. Survey courses generally do not.

How it handles electrification

Electrification is the dominant change in the sector and most mobility curricula cover it at the level of a trend rather than a project.

If your work involves buying, operating or financing electric vehicles, check whether the course teaches duty cycle analysis, charging strategy and total cost of ownership, or just describes the transition.

Whether the numbers are local

Mode share, fuel and electricity prices, subsidy schemes, road pricing, depot land costs and grid connection charges are all local, and they decide whether a plan works.

A course built on one city or country can still teach the method. Make sure you know which assumptions you will have to replace.

Public sector or commercial framing

Transport policy training and commercial fleet training look similar on a syllabus and serve opposite purposes. One optimises for welfare and access, the other for cost per kilometre.

Check which framing the case studies use. Taking the wrong one wastes the course rather than half of it.

Where it stops

Every mobility course reaches a boundary where the answer depends on something specific: battery degradation in a duty cycle, grid connection capacity at a depot, or the residual value of a used electric vehicle.

Ask where the course stops. A provider who names its boundary honestly is more useful than one who implies there isn't one.

The label covers several products with different audiences and very different usefulness.

Transport policy and planning

Demand modelling, mode shift, appraisal methods, road pricing and regulation. Suits public authorities and consultancies. Method-heavy and generally the most rigorous category.

Fleet electrification

Duty cycle analysis, total cost of ownership, depot and charging design, and phased transition planning. Suits fleet, logistics and facilities teams. The most directly actionable route.

Charging infrastructure and networks

Site selection, hardware, standards, grid connection, utilisation economics and network operation. Suits infrastructure investors, utilities and property teams.

Urban and shared mobility

Micromobility, ride hailing, public transport integration and kerbside management. Suits city staff and operators. Fast-moving, so check how recently the case studies were written.

Logistics and freight decarbonisation

Heavy vehicles, depot charging, route feasibility, and where hydrogen or biofuels compete with batteries. Suits transport operators and shippers.

Autonomy and connected vehicles

Sensing, software stacks, safety cases and regulation. A specialist track with limited overlap with the rest of mobility work, and best taken on its own terms.

Mobility training FAQ

Is a general mobility course worth taking?

Only if you need breadth for a reason, such as moving into a strategy or policy role that spans modes. If you are accountable for one thing, a depot, a fleet, a network, a piece of legislation, a focused course on that thing will change your work more. Breadth is a legitimate goal, but be clear that you are buying vocabulary rather than capability.

What is the most useful mobility course for a fleet manager?

Fleet electrification, and specifically one built around duty cycle analysis and total cost of ownership rather than transition narratives. Ask whether you will produce a working plan for your own depot by the end. If not, keep looking.

Where do mobility courses usually fall short?

At the battery. Almost every electrification plan eventually depends on how fast the pack degrades under a particular duty cycle, what the warranty actually commits the supplier to, and what the vehicle is worth in year eight. Mobility curricula rarely go near any of that.

Do I need technical knowledge?

Not for policy, planning or fleet routes, which are written for non-engineers. Charging infrastructure and autonomy tracks assume more technical comfort, though rarely a full engineering background.
